Valentine’s Day is just round the corner. And when we think Valentine’s Day, roses are perhaps the first thing that is up on our minds. In the classic play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, Juliet speaks the immortal lines - that which we call a rose By any other name would smell as sweet. From ages immemorial, this flower of love has found its appreciation in all artistic endeavors like poetry art and music associating it with beauty and love. Surprisingly, if you happen to rearrange the letters of the word Rose, you get Eros, the God of love in Greek Mythology.

The Rose also has a long history of symbolism and meaning. The ancient Greeks and Romans identified the rose with their goddesses of love (Aphrodite and Venus). In Rome a wild rose would be placed on the door of a room where confidential matters were discussed. Early Christians identified the five petals of the rose with the five wounds of Christ. Despite this interpretation, their leaders were hesitant to adopt it because of its association with Roman excesses and pagan ritual. The red rose was eventually adopted as a symbol of the blood of the Christian martyrs. Roses also later came to be associated with the Virgin Mary.

This Valentine’s Day you can choose the right rose after you know the diferent meanings associated with its colors. Heres a slide show which would help you choose your pick.
